Week 1 Lecture

This first lecture gave an insight into what the semester had in store. I am looking forward to this semester as 'future scenarios' and 'architecture fiction' are things that I have never really dealt with or considered in any previous work. It should be an interesting challenge and force designers to really use their imagination and think outside the box. The following phrase from the lecture really stood out as it gives a good insight and understanding as to what 'future scenarios' and 'architectural fiction' actually meant to a designer:

  • Envisioning rather than simply responding to what you see today, is essential to be able to prepare and respond to future needs. A good solution should not be a mere response to short-term issues but instead should stay relevant for a prolonged period of time. An architectural proposition should therefore be backed up with a thoughtful future vision and strategy.

The two assignments given are as follows:

Project 1 (40%)
Future Scenarios and Architectural Opportunities
Due Date: Friday 31 August 2012

Project 2 (60%)
Architecture Fiction
Due Date: Friday 9 November 2012

For the Project 1, we will have to select from 4 theme groups -
1. Urban - Brisbane City (Queen St)
2. Suburban - Paddington Shopping Centre
3. Regional - Woodford
4. Virtual - World

I am interested in both the Urban and Suburban theme groups. Both these theme groups seem like they would impact Brisbane the most and I am excited to discover a scenario relating to the future of Brisbane City.
