Week 8 - Mission Statement

Context:
Paddington is one of only a few suburbs neighbouring Brisbane’s CBD. It is mostly a residential suburb, consisting of a driving force of local traders, with the main thoroughfare rich in history of residential storefronts and Paddington Central. This essentially makes Paddington a Microcosm of an inclusive society, this society being Brisbane.

The general future conception of an ever growing city that would eventually expand into Paddington would not apply to this future scenario. Cities are engines for economic growth, but a new movement in fabrication concentrates on creating engines focused more towards community growth. A growth to support the virtual realm. The design allows individuals to share their ideas and collaborate with one another to evolve ideas by utilising feedback. The informer becomes informed and vice versa, creating a community of prosumers, and we would start to see the beginning of a self sufficient community.

The Microcosm model allows Paddington to be viewed by a number of different layers and therefore create a better understanding towards the links in its mechanism.

Function:
The function of the precinct is centred around providing a diverse range of public/urban spaces to cater for the whole community. To create a public precinct intended emerging and existing local traders in any field to be able to exhibit, market and promote goods and services through educational events. The precinct provides free facilities such as an events hub, learning spaces and performing spaces, as well as health and wellbeing and a retail sector. The centre and the spaces within are focused at better benefiting the community, whether it be in education or wellbeing. The use of an active ground floor will encourage community engagement through the use of urban spaces for flowing activity.

Form:
The design will incorporate a multi-level facet on both the physical and non-physical realm. The community is encouraged to advance from the catalyst events hub throughout the centre. Apart from the retail sector, the centre consists of spaces to further benefit the community through education and well being. Spaces will be dedicated to arts and craft, workshops, a gymnasium as well as conference rooms and function spaces. Viewing screens and platforms are placed throughout the centre that are focused on the events hub. Continually exposing new ideas and products within the community creates awareness and passively involves the community beyond its physical location.
