As we have
now formed a strong group, we decided to expand on the scenario of an online store
with a physical storefront. We investigated how we could possibly play on the
idea of the concept of an online store, by rather than shopping online from
home, a customer still goes to a physical store where the products a replaced
with virtual avatars. A customer now has the option to be able to select the
products they desire, and this is digitally catalogued, and then they can have
it ready packaged for them as they leave the store, or they can pick a time for
when it will be delivered to their home. With further discussion, we decided
that there are positive and negative attributed to the sustainability of this
scenario. On the positive side, customers would be driving less to the stores
as they can have items delivered to their home. They have to option to do
shopping on lunch breaks and have it delivered to their home after business
hours. Yet there are also negative attributes in the delivery service as
transporting goods by vehicle is not a very sustainable proposition. There are
also a number of issues that arose, such as the convenience of being able to by
products then and there at a store, as well as the physical aspect of being
able to touch and smell the items that you are about to purchase. All these issues will need to be ironed out,
but we believe that we are heading in the right direction.
We got this initial idea from a group member who has had experience in a digitial supermarket in japan. The products are replaced with images and a barcode. When you enter the store you log into the store on your phone and scan the barcode with your phone of products you want. These products then get packaged for you whilst you are still shopping and a ready waiting for you when you go to exit. The image above shows how it works.
